About the journal
SFlix is an independent, reader-supported journal of Japanese cinema — with a particular love for the samurai film — edited from Tbilisi since 2016.
Who we are
SFlix began as a newsletter passed between a handful of friends who could not stop arguing about Kurosawa, and grew into a monthly journal. We are writers and translators, not a studio or a distributor — our only loyalty is to the reader and to the film on the screen.
What we publish
- Reviews of new releases, festival premieres and restorations.
- Retrospectives — director seasons and genre deep-dives across jidaigeki, yakuza and the New Wave.
- Long essays on form, violence, landscape and myth in Japanese cinema.
- Translations and interviews that bring overlooked work to a wider readership.
How we work
Everything is written by people who are paid for their work and credited by name. We take pitches from new writers, we correct the record when we are wrong, and we carry no advertising. The journal is supported by its readers, and that is the whole business model.
Where we are
The editors are based in Tbilisi. The quickest way to reach a person is the contact form or [email protected].
